Half-day hike
Cueva de los Guácharos in Jardín: hike, timing and Salto del Ángel
Less famous than Esplendor and quieter. It is a waterfall falling in front of a cave where oilbirds live, nocturnal fruit-eating birds that find their way in the dark with clicks. Access crosses private farms, so it works best with someone local.

Where it is
At the top of the La Salada creek, in the area of the same name, about five kilometers from town, according to the Jardín tourism portal. There are two approaches: via Alto del Cuchillón, which passes Salto del Ángel first, or via La Salada, which reaches the cave first and leaves the waterfall about 20 minutes upstream.
Timing, leg by leg
| Leg | Time |
|---|---|
| Vehicle to Alto del Cuchillón | 30 min |
| Walk at an easy to moderate pace | 80 min |
| At the cave | 30 min |
| Return | 120 min |
Times from the Jardín tourism portal. The return is longer because it is uphill.
Why with a guide
- The Cuchillón approach crosses private land that may charge; the guide sorts that out.
- There are slick, steep steps near the water.
- The trails are not clearly signed.
How to see the oilbirds
Oilbirds spend the day inside the cave and come out at dusk to look for fruit. By day you hear them more than you see them. Do not use flash or go deep inside: the colony gets stressed and the floor is slippery.
If you only have time for one cave, choose Cueva del Esplendor. If you have already seen it, this one is next.
Pair it with an easy day: a coffee tour in the afternoon or the cock-of-the-rock if you are back before five. To plan the week, check the weather by month.
Those who want quiet after this hike tend to prefer the hosterías outside town to the bustle of the square.
