Jardín was founded on May 23, 1863, and became a municipality in 1882. Its main square, paved with stones from the Tapartó river, has been a National Monument since 1985, and the town belongs to Colombia's Heritage Towns Network. In November 2024 UN Tourism picked it as one of that year's Best Tourism Villages, the only Colombian town in that edition. What you see from the square is covered in basilica and main square.

People come for three things: Cueva del Esplendor, a waterfall dropping through a hole in a cave roof; the cock-of-the-rock, which shows up every afternoon 400 meters from the square; and coffee, drunk at the colorful tables on the square or explored on a farm tour.
